Our Story

How it all started...

Calvary Baptist Church was founded on June 8, 1958, in an attempt to provide spiritual edification and sound doctrinal truth to the people of Union Grove and the surrounding area.  Calvary has a great reputation of friendliness and longevity, welcoming people from every walk of life. In sixty one years of ministry the church has only been led by three Pastors.  Pastor J.R. Speece planted the church and pastored Calvary from 1958-1978.  Upon his resignation, the church then called Pastor Joe Hamilton, who lead from 1978-1991. In 1991, the church called Pastor Stephen Pope, and he has served as its pastor until the present day.  In 1991 the church averaged approximately twenty people in attendance, but since that time God has saw fit too bless in a remarkable and miraculous way.  Calvary has been able to expand its outreach by starting numerous ministries, some of which include: the Bus ministry, the Prison ministry,  the Nursing home ministry, Good News Club, Youth ministry, and also supporting and partnering with missionaries around the world.  The weekly church services are now aired on three different radio stations, and live-streamed on the worldwide web. Our mission as a local New Testament church is that we might evangelize the lost, edify the saved, multiply as a congregation, and above all—glorify our Savior.
